A New Council, a Long Delay Ends (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 5 – Part 1)
At last, the gods turn their gaze back to the man long absent from his own story. What has been endured in silence is spoken aloud.
In The Odyssey, Book 5, Dawn rises and the Olympian gods gather in council beneath the authority of Zeus. Athene speaks with sharp clarity, reminding them of Odysseus’ suffering on a distant island, held against his will by the nymph Calypso, cut off from ships, crew, and return.
She presses the injustice further still: while Odysseus languishes forgotten, his son now faces mortal danger at home. The balance of neglect and loyalty is laid bare before the gods—and the long-stalled fate of Odysseus is brought once more into judgment.
