Freedom is sealed by solemn promise—and temptation makes one last appeal. Even with the way open, the cost of leaving is laid bare.
In The Odyssey, Book 5, Calypso answers Odysseus’ demand with the greatest oath the gods can swear, calling Earth, Heaven, and the Styx to witness that she will plot no harm against him. Assured at last, Odysseus follows her back to the cave, where mortal and immortal share a final meal.
Calypso then speaks plainly of the road ahead, warning of the suffering yet to come and offering an alternative: remain with her, live without death, and forsake the perilous return. Odysseus’ longing for home and wife stands silently against the promise of immortality, and the choice—already made—is tested one final time.
