For two nights and two days he is carried on the swell, fearing death, until calm returns and land rises suddenly before him—wooded and near, like life restored to a dying father.
But hope falters at the sound of surf. The coast offers no harbor, only sheer rock, reefs, and thunderous waves. As Odysseus weighs his peril—whether to risk the cliffs, search further along the shore, or fear monsters of the deep—he knows the earth-shaker’s anger has not fully spent itself. Survival now depends on judgment as much as endurance.

Calypso arms him with tools and leads him to the trees, and Odysseus sets to work with practiced skill—felling timber, shaping beams, boring joints, and fitting mast, sail, and rudder. Calypso then speaks plainly of the road ahead, warning of the suffering yet to come and offering an alternative: remain with her, live without death, and forsake the perilous return. Odysseus’ longing for home and wife stands silently against the promise of immortality, and the choice—already made—is tested one final time.

Yet she yields. Zeus’ will cannot be undone. Though she cannot provide ship or crew, Calypso vows to give Odysseus honest counsel, hiding nothing that might help him reach his home unharmed—while Hermes warns her not to invite the thunderer’s anger by delay.

The decree is final: Odysseus, long-suffering beyond all others, must be released. Though all his companions were lost after angering Athene, it is not fated that Odysseus should perish in exile. He is destined yet to see his friends, return to his high-roofed home, and set foot once more in his own land.

Antinous calls the company together and lays bare his fear: Telemachus is growing beyond their control. He urges immediate action, proposing an ambush at sea between Ithaca and Samos, where the young prince’s search for his father might be ended in blood before he reaches manhood.

In The Odyssey, Book 4, Menelaus concludes his account by describing his obedience to the gods’ command: the voyage back to Aegyptus, the offering of hecatombs, and the raising of a lasting memorial for Agamemnon. With the gods appeased, a fair wind carries him safely home at last.
Now finished with his story, Menelaus turns to hospitality. He urges Telemachus to remain in Sparta a while longer, promising honor, gifts, and safe passage onward—tokens of friendship meant to endure long after the journey resumes.
